Product description: Pimoroni - Audio Dac Shim - I2S line audio output

Audio Dac Shim overlay designed for the Raspberry Pi. Based on thePCM5100A DACchip, which takes high quality digital audio from the Raspberry Pi and outputs clear 24-bit / 192 kHz linear stereo audio through a3.5mm jack. The overlay uses theI2Sbus to communicate with the Raspberry Pi. Product is compatible with all versions of Raspberry Pi equipped with 40 pin GPIO connector. Installation of the overlay does not require soldering, if needed it can be removed from the microcomputer at any time. Audio Dac Shim, due to its small size can be placed in a Raspberry Pi case. The product is a convenient way to add audio output to a RaspberryPi ZeroorRaspberry Pi 400.

Audio Dac Shim software

The manufacturer of theAudio Dac Shim has released specialPirate Audiosoftware that allows I2S audio configurations. It also includes plug-ins to support Mopida, Steaming Spotify or playing local files. Detailed instructions can be found inthe GitHub repositoryand thePirate Audiouser manual.

Configuration tips
  • It is possible to set Alsa as the default device on a Raspberry Pi system in the file:/boot/config.txtline:dtoverlay=hifiberry-dac
  • For Raspberry Pi devices with an audio jack, you may also need to disable the built-in audio by adding a#to the beginning of the following line (this may help applications automatically find the correct audio device):#dtparam=audio=on
The procedure for installing the Pirate Audio software
  • Preparing an SD card with the latest version of the Raspberry Pi operating system
  • Connecting to a Wi-Fi or wired network
  • Open a terminal and enter the following commands:git clone https://github.com/pimoroni/pirate-audiocd pirate-audio/mopidysudo ./install.sh
  • Restarting the Raspberry Pi
Operation notes
  • It is possible to use the Audio Dac Shim without the 40 pin additional Goldpin strip with other Hat and miniHAT caps if they do not have components underneath that can damage the Audio Dac surface
  • When connecting the Audio Dac Shim to the Raspberry Pi 400, use for example theFlat HAT Hacker
  • The Audio Dac Shim uses GPIO pins: 18, 19 and 21 (as well as 5v and GND), if it will be used in conjunction with other extensions please check for possiblepinconflicts usingpinout.xyz

Audio Dac Shim does not come with soldered pins.
