What is an e-paper?

E-paper displays use electrophoretic microcapsule technology for display: charged particles suspended in a transparent liquid will move to the sides of the microcapsule when an electric field is applied, making the microcapsule visible by reflecting ambient light, just like traditional printed paper. The e-paper display clearly displays images/text in lamplight or natural light, requires no backlight, and has a viewing angle of nearly 170°. This type of display is usually used in e-book readers because of its paper-like effect.

Pinouts of the e-paper display module

The e-paper display module has a socket for direct connection to the Raspberry Pi Pico. It uses such pins as:

  • VSYS - input voltage (default)
  • 3V3(OUT) - input voltage
  • GND - ground
  • GP6|TP_SDA - I2C data line of the touch controller
  • GP7|TP_SCL - I2C clock line of the touch controller
  • GP8|e-Paper_DC - data / command pin, high for data, low for commands
  • GP9|e-Paper_CS - SPI chip select pin, activated by low state
  • GP10|e-Paper_CLK - SPI SCK pin
  • GP11|e-Paper_DIN - SPI MOSI pin
  • GP12|e-Paper_ERST - external reset, activated by a low state
  • GP13|e-Paper_BUSY - busy status output
  • GP16|TP_TRST - touch controller reset, low state activated
  • GP17|TP_INT - touch controller interrupts
  • GP2|KEY0 - user key 0
  • GP3|KEY1 - user key 1
  • GP4|KEY2 - user key 2
  • RUN - reset button
